Password Help

All SELCO users have three separate passwords.

  1. Email/Web Password—As the name implies, this password is used to access your email and to use all of the web forms and confidential pages on the SELCO website. The same username and password is used to access these services because they all run from our Windows NT network and thus use the same security structure.

  2. Automation System Password—This password is often known as the “DRA” or “Alpha” password (for the automation system and server name, respectively). As the name implies, this password is used to access the automation system via SmarTerm or a dumb terminal. Because the automation system server is completely separate from the Windows NT network, it has to have its own username and password.

  3. Training Password—This password is used to gain access to the SELCO training web application, which allows users to sign up for classes and workshops at SELCO. Some workshops are made available to people outside the SELCO system so the application also needs to be available to those folks. Giving these non-SELCO users an account on our Windows NT network or automation system would allow them access to these resources. Therefore, we had to set up the training application with a separate username and password.

  4. Why three Passwords?

One reason is that different SELCO services are run from different servers, some of which cannot use the same security. Another reason is that people outside the SELCO region use some SELCO services and we don’t want to give these folks access to other parts of the network.

How can I manage my passwords? Three passwords are too many to remember!

The best advice we can give you is to make all your passwords the same. You can change each of your three passwords as desired. Simply change them all to be the same. Bear in mind that your Automation System passwords expire periodically and must be changed. To keep them the same, you will need to change the others each time one of them expires. Another option is to write them down in a secure place. This is not an option we encourage, but if it helps feel free to do it.

OK, how do I change my passwords so they are all the same?

Each of your passwords is changed in a different way:

Email/Web Password—Change this password by clicking here
Automation System Password—Change this password by selecting “Change your Password” on the main system menu you see after you log in to the Alpha
Training Password—Change this password in the “Your Account” section of the training web application.

You mentioned that passwords expire periodically. Why? How often does this happen?
The only password that expires periodically is your Automation System password, which expires every 60 days. This improves security on the Alpha. Password expiring is not done with the other two passwords because the design of SELCO’s wide area network makes it impractical.
