09-04-2008 DWS The Citrix Presentation Server 4.0 Rollout has not yet been completed at the following public libraries: Northfield is partially completed due to a Novell Network printing issue. City of Northfield technical staff were busy working on another issue and will work on the printing issue this month. Will schedule an appointment to go out to Owatonna in the next week. Still working on getting a Business class DSL line setup at Plainview. Once this is done the Citrix Presentation Server 4.0 Rollout will be scheduled for Plainview. Winona is partially completed. Will schedule a time to complete the rollout at Winona.
09-04-2008 DWS The Citrix Presentation Server 4.0 Rollout has been completed at Faribault and Hokah.
7/23/2008 DWS The Citrix Presentation Server 4.0 Rollout has not yet been completed at the following public libraries: Faribault, Hokah, Northfield, Owatonna, Plainview and Winona. Ran into a printing issue at Northfield and are waiting for the City of Northfield tech people to come up with a resolution to the problem involving staff people logging into the Novell Network and printing in a Citrix - Horizon session. Ran into printing issues as Faribault Public Library and need to reschedule a time to go back. Rolled back the Plainview Citrix Rollout until the library is off the Frame Relay Network connection in August 2008.
06-23-2008 DWS After initial testing in a live environment the Virtual server was removed from production. Another physical server was added to production. Currently there are four Terminal Servers in production. Two other Terminal Servers are built and ready in reserve. A new Web Interface Server was built and put into production. Also a new Citrix Licensing Server and TS-CAL Licensing Server have been built and are currently in production. A site visit to Northfield has been scheduled for friday June 27, 2008 to rollout Horizon Citrix connections.
05-29-2008 DRL Another (virtual) server has been added to the farm. Buckham Memorial, Hokah, Northfield, and Owatonna PLs are the next on the list. Hokah needs a price quote on a Special Project to repair a PC that will not allow the clent installation--Hokah is not a PC Support customer library.
05-12-2008 DRL The old farm has been decommisioned. Dave is working on adding another server to the farm; the existing farm is getting close to the maximum number of users. We are getting close to finishing installations at the public libraries.

01-22-2008 DRL Wabasha PL has been completed. Dave is going to try to get Rochester Public Schools finished up next.
01-10-2008 DRL Harmony PL, Kellogg Middle School, Rushford PL, Brownsdale PL have been completed. Wabasha PL has been partially completed.
08-02-2007 DRL Installation at Stewartville PL is complete.
07-30-2007 DRL Cannon Falls PL was installed on 07-23. Two office PCs remain to be set up. Concern was raised about a local shared network drive that is not accessible from MetaFrame. Training on using Home drives for Cannon Falls users has been conducted. Dave will make a follow-up call to ensure that this solution is working.
07-19-2007 DRL Lanesboro PL is being installed today.
07-18-2007 DRL Have installed Caledonia PL.
07-17-2007 DRL Cannon Falls PL has postponed their installation. We are working on rescheduling.
07-16-2007 DRL Held a phone meeting with Randy at Red Wing PL to examine the logs maintained by library staff. Reported problems fell into three categories:
Barcodes being scanned incorrectly--This problem has been resolved by increasing the Intercarriage Delay setting on each scanner. Randy is holding off on changing this setting on several scanners as they are to be replaced shortly. We all agreed that this problem has been resolved.
General performance problems (slowness)--There was agreement among all participants that performance problems are part of running applications over the Internet and that the reported incidents were not numerous or severe enough to warrant further action.
Severe performance problems when registering new patrons--Does not appear to be directly related to MetaFrame; may have to do with the installation on the MetaFrame server. There was agreement among all participants that this problem requires further action. Craig and Dave will work on troubleshooting.
Randy further stated that decreasing the number of connections maintained by the SonicWall appears to have helped ease performance issues.
Pine Island PL and Chatfield PL were installed and are operating successfully. Cannon Falls PL is scheduled for tomorrow (07-17).
We have settled on FileZilla as the FTP client for MetaFrame users. Craig will complete testing to make sure it works as expected in multiuser environment.
Extensive discussion of receipt printers. There are two ways to set up receipt printers:
Use Windows printer management
User printer control characters to dump data directly to the printer
Using Windows to manage the receipt printer has the advantage of standardization. So long as we have the appropriate drivers, setting up each printer will work the same way. The disadvantage of using Windows is a delay between the time printing is initiated (by pressing F11) and the start of printing; this delay is approx. 2 seconds.
The advantage of using control codes is speed. The disadvantage is the variety of control codes for different printers. Each printer has a different set of codes that are not usually well-documented by the manufacturer. Newer printers, most notably the thermal ones do not usually come with that information in any form. Codes can differ amongst the same printer model, making installation and support difficult. On the positive side, the codes for most commonly-used printers are already known to SELCO staff; the hard work has been done.
Final decision: We will use control codes as our first, preferred solution. If control characters do not work or are not available, we will fall back on Windows printer management. Since the method chosen to run the printers has a direct impact on how the notice text is set-up, we will need to be consistent within each library--if one receipt printer requires Windows printer management, we will have to use Windows for all the printers at that library. It should be noted that most newer printers, and all models of thermal printers we have so far encountered, will require the use of Windows printer management.
Discussion of limiting support to receipt printers to those models known to work with MetaFrame. Decision made that we have not yet reached a point where we have to do this. It was noted that there is a lead time of at least one year between time such a decision is made and when it can go into effect, due to the need to give the libraries time to plan for equipment replacement.
07-02-2007 DRL We have made adjustments to the SonicWall at Red Wing to address the bandwidth issue, which seems to be actually caused by a setting involving HTML connections. The situation appears to be improved from our end but we are waiting for confirmation from Randy. Dave will contact Randy to see how this works. Dave will press for confirmation on the barcode scanners. We have identified a need for an FTP application for libraries downloading catalog records from some vendors. Pine Island installation is scheduled for 07-03. Checklist draft is completed. Dave believes that Windows printing should work for receipt printers and we will conduct installations accordingly. Dave is going to go ahead and switch Chatfield PL today as part of a pre-arranged site visit. After Pine Island and Chatfield, we will contact Cannon Falls PL.
06-18-2007 DRL Red Wing PL is blocking Runescape again due to bandwidth concerns. This was our suggestion. No word on the barcode scanners, partly due to obscuring caused by the bandwidth issue. Dave will check with Randy about their bandwidth now that they are blocking Runescape. Dave is still investigating receipt printers (serial commands vs. Windows). Pine Island rollout still pending. Checklist pending. Question raised about having SELCO staff use HelpTrac via MetaFrame. We will proceed, starting with a check to make sure that everyone is on the new farm. Paul will check on this and handle the upgrade.
06-04-2007 DRL Still no word from Randy about the barcode scanners--Dave will give him a call. Also no word about bandwidth issues since they re-allowed Runescape. Dave will also check on this.
Issue involving receipt printers has been raised: should we continue using serial commands or start setting up printers to use Windows printing control? Newer devices such as thermal printers work better with Windows; it would be good to have a standard way of doing this. We will test at Red Wing using Windows for printers that have been using serial commands. At the same time we will roll out Pine Island PL. Idea raised to create a standard checklist for rolling MetaFrame out at new sites. Craig will take the lead on this working from information already compiled by Dave. Question raised about training Help Desk team when it comes time for them to take responsibility for calls. A document already exists for this purpose. Craig will attend the next Help Desk and Training team meeting to acquaint them with the project and training will follow. Installations will be carried out by one or two (depending on size of the site) with one technician standing by at the office to carry out local (server) tasks.
04-23-2007 DRL Information on adjusting the scanners has been sent to Randy; no word on where he is with it. Paul C. will check with Randy today for an update. Packet shaping has been enabled on the SonicWall at Red Wing; we need to test this for a couple of weeks to see if it fixes the bandwidth issue. A roll-out date will be set at our next team meeting in two weeks. Craig and Dave will build a second production server to be cloned in preparation for the roll-out.
04-11-2007 DRL Craig, Paul C. and Donovan met to discuss the barcode scanner character delay issue. Paul C. knows how to program the scanners but needs to study up on this particular setting. He will then make the change at Red Wing PL and we will test it out. The delay can be set anywhere from 0 to 99 milliseconds and there is no hard and fast rule on what it should be (right now it is 0). Paul will increase the delay in small increments (10 to 20 milliseconds) and test. With input from Red Wing staff, we should be able to identify the optimal setting.
In the future, this will be part of the set up for all barcode scanners. Since the need for character delay is dictated by local conditions, however, we will never have one hard and fast setting for all libraries. We will identify the best starting point and adjust as needed.
04-09-2007 DRL Red Wing is experiencing performance issues stemming from congestion of their upload bandwidth. We are working with the SonicWall router to shape traffic and ease this problem. The library has also decided to block Runescape use, which is probably partly responsible for the problem. We are not relying on this to solve the problem, however.
There has also been an issue with barcode scanner delay. We need to increase the delay after a number is scanned. Craig, Paul C, and Donovan will address this issue.
Barring further problems, we should be ready to schedule the roll out after these issues are solved.
03-12-2007 DRL Have had intermittent performance issues at Red Wing, according to their staff. Rushford has made similar complaints. Dave will have them call him direct when such problems occur so he can check the network connection. Craig will set up a performence log on the MetaFrame server on the off chance (unlikely) that it's a server problem.
02-26-2007 DRL Testing is going well with neither library reporting problems.
02-05-2007 DRL Winona PL has been dropped from the testing pool. Red Wing PL is not completely set up yet and this will be completed ASAP. Printing issues have arisen. Dave will be on site on 02-07 and will troubleshoot further. We need to develop training for the Help Desk. A draft list of Help Desk objectives has been created but needs to be finalized.
01-18-2007 DRL Beta testing at Red Wing PL, Rushford PL, and Winona PL is about to start. Discussed user training today. After beta, sites will be migrated in the following order: 1) All sites using current MetaFrame farm, 2) Other public libraries, 3) Other media centers. Other media centers will be carried out in the fall after school is back in session.
10-30-2006 DRL Server farm base server and web interface server have been set up. Secure Gateway is to be setup today. Syntax will then visit on 11-06 to fine-tune. Following fine-tuning by Syntax and SELCO staff, beta testing will commence at Rushford PL and Red Wing PL (see timeline for details).
8/18/2006 CO We now have purchased all the licensing, servers, and consulting time we should need to begin the upgrade to the Citrix Presentation Server 4.0 farm. Craig, Paul B, and Dave will come up with a timeline and task list for Donovan.
