Web Design Support/Training for Rushford PL via Winona PL

TC  06/06/2008  Will continue to provide support as Linda needs.  Linda now has the tools she needs to work on the Rushford Web site.  Setting the Help Desk ticket status to resolved, ticket #4201 in Service Desk.

TC  6/11/2008  Setup Linda's account for FTP access, wrote a how-to on KompoZer FTP site setup, and how-to publish pages in KompoZer.  Emailed to Linda and CCed Aurora.

TC  6/4/2008  Linda called today and left a message that she had gotten the search box setup.  She found the links.  Also she needed to know about FTP setup.

TC  6/2/2008  Linda sent in an email today:

Hi Tom,

First, thanks again for coming down the other week.  There were many "ah-ha!" moments that really helped me get a better handle on editing the pages.

I have found a template that is quite easy to modify and am going to have a draft of the website ready for Susan to review by the end of the week.

I am wondering if you would be able to send me the Rushford iPAC links (one to search only Rushford holdings, and one to search all SELCO libraries with Rushford as the default home location).  The Quick Search box will search Rushford Public Library only.  There will also be a navigation button for the Library Catalog, which will search all SELCO libraries.  I am having a bit of trouble trying to modify the Northfield Quick Search box, so I may need to get it from another site.  Would you have a template for that by chance?

During the training session, we also talked about the process for uploading the files to the SELCO server.  Would it be possible to get that set up at this time?

There is quite a bit of out of date and inaccurate information on her old site, so we are hoping to get at least part of the new site up very soon.  Susan asked if we could post an "under construction" message to her current site.

Thanks.

TC  5/23/2008  Aurora and Tom meet with Linda at Winona.  Very productive.  Linda was happy with the meeting, and seemed to learn a lot.  Linda had a few more questions regarding file size limitations per site, possibly a tool for nav menu drop out (JavaScript and CSS), links for a search box add on, and FTP setup.

TC 5/15/2008  Setup new training date for Linda next Friday, 5/23.

TC 4/25/2008  Postponed training for Linda.

TC 4/9/2008  Talked w/ Linda @ Winona today regarding training/help on Web design.  We discussed doing training on Kompozer.  The design of the Rushford site will be similar to the design of the Northfield site.  Also, need to setup an FTP account so Linda can upload files to the server.  This training will be more project based, than a general class on Web Design software and best practices, but it will cover much of the same material.  We will plan on meeting April 25th at Winona to do training.
An outline for the training might be:

  1. Start w/ looking at the design, discuss best practices for the Web, then move to Kompozer.
  2. Discuss goals/audience for the new site
  3. Discuss what features/content will help to attain the goals set forth.
  4. Discuss the design and incorporate best practices where apt (e.g. discussing palette selection and usability as well as accessibility, HTML/CSS and cross-browsing issues, etc.)
  5. Discuss Kompozer, demo a feature & have Linda try it, etc.

TC 3/19/2008  Met w/ Aurora to discuss training.  I need to discuss more with Linda to get her specific needs met.  See notes from 3/3.  Also research more library sites to get example of + and - design.  Perhaps also start to include some training info on the www.selco.info Web site.  Handouts, links, etc.  See www.selco.info > Programs & Services > Training.

TC 3/18/2008 Earlier this week, and some the week prior, dug up my old notes on a basic Web design class taught by KSRE staff.  Some of the content is still good, some dated, some needs updating.  Also, looked again at some of my Web design related books to inc. some of the content. Today, Tuesday 3/18, did an outline of topics to cover in a basic Web design course for libraries:

  • Site Planning (establish goals, dfn. audience -- inc. their needs, tech. ability, hardward/softare, etc.)
  • Good Design/Layout Concepts (repetition, alignment, contrast, proximity, navigation schemes)
  • Usability/Accessibility (inc. cross browser issues, readability, HCI factors, etc.)
  • Cover Komposer (ftp setup, working w/ text, color, links, images, ul/ol, tables, HTML/CSS)

TC 3/3/2008  Contacted Linda regarding Web editing software and training.  Her needs are to do a complete site redesign of the Rushford site for Susan.  Needs FTP account setup?  Might be one already for the Rushford Web site.  Also check the Northfield site.  Linda likes it.  Possibly model the Rushford redesign after it.  Also need to talk to Aurora about training.

TC 2/15/2008  This week we decided to recommend Kompozer as a Web editor for our libraries.  I will be in contact w/ Linda soon to discuss this project further.

TC 2/1/2008  I have been updating this ticket.  It's in the selco.info projects.  In process of choosing a Web design editor and will later meet w/ Linda @ Winona.

FROM HD Ticket 014451:
JP1 01/10/2008 03:46 PM  I (linda weinmann) have volunteered to help Susan Hart update her library's website.  Since this will be a new venture for me, I am looking for any assistance on how to get started, training, and tips you may be able to offer.  I thought at one point SELCO offered a course on creating a website but did not see anything listed currently.
