Help the state celebrate!





Sesquicentennial Events in the Region

  • Monday, March 10 - The Red Wing Public Library welcomes the banner to the SELCO region.
  • Monday, March 17 through Tuesday, March 18 -- Lake City Public Library
Check out the celebration photos from the Lake City Public Library!
  • Friday, April 4 through Friday, April 11 -- Fillmore County Libraries.   The Banner arrives at each library at 10:00am on the appropriate day.

Fillmore County - The Fillmore County Sheriff will escort the banner from library to library.

Mabel Public Library - Friday, April 4 – Banner will arrive at the library in a covered wagon  and the library will extend their hours to 9:00am – 5:00pm.

Harmony Public Library - Saturday, April 5 and Sunday, 6, arriving on the 5th at 10:00am, The library will hold an Open House from 10:00am – 4:00pm on Saturday and from 12:00pm – 2:00pm on Sunday when the banner will go to the Greenfield Lutheran Church for the Good Earth Village Choir Concert from 3:00pm to 4:00pm.  Members of the Fillmore Central High School Band may be playing for the arrival of the banner.

Rushford Public Library – Monday, April 7 - Open house @ the library from 10-6, Story time throughout the day with students, New books on Minnesota available for checkout

Lanesboro Public Library – Tuesday, April 8  - The library will open early that day at 10:00. There will be a reception at the library from 10am -8pm, sponsored by the Library Board and the Lanesboro Chamber of Commerce.  The Lanesboro Historical Museum will have a display at the library of the history of Lanesboro.  At 6:30, Lee Frelich, Director, U of MN Center for Hardwood Ecology will give a Rural Sustainability lecture on "Climate Changes on Forests" in the community center dining hall.

Preston Public Library – Wednesday, April 9 - 10:00 am : Mayor accepts banner, a small ensemble of 8th graders from the middle school will play a song.  Throughout the day : Coloring contest for preschool through 6th grade, display from the Preston Historical Society, Showings of "Preston Through the Years" video (done for Preston's sesquicentennial in 2005), cookies and bars throughout the day.

Spring Valley Public Library – Thursday, April 10 - Mayors from Wykoff and Spring Valley will accept the banner from the Preston Library Director Beth Anderson at the Kingsland Middle School in Wykoff at 9 a.m. on April 10th.  The Minnesota History Class taught by Mr. Scott Mulholland will have a Statehood Birthday party! The banner will then travel to Spring Valley Public Library where it will be displayed from 10:00 a. m. till 8 p.m.  Historic Forestville and Spring Valley Historical Society will also be taking part.

Chatfield Public Library – Friday, April 11 - Chatfield's Mayor will receive the banner from Spring Valley's Mayor at the Library.  The reception will include music from Chatfield Brass Band members, a display of Minnesota and Chatfield history books, and a large birthday cake and other refreshments for everyone to enjoy.  The banner and journal will remain at the Chatfield Public Library until the library closes at 2pm on Saturday, April 12th.


  • Saturday, May 3 -- Owatonna Public Library

The Sheriff's Posse will ride the banner from the Blooming Prairie Public Library to the Owatonna Public Library.  The banner will be guarded by volunteers from the Steele County Historical Society.  The banner will be taken with ceremony by the Owatonna Police Department to Willow Creek School, where the students are studying Minnesota History.  The Willow Creek students will take the banner to the Faribault Public Library on May 6th.
