Applications for FY2018 Community Reads Grants will open October 1, 2017 and will be accepted through April 1, 2018. Funds must be spent by June 30, 2018.
Community Reads is a program designed specifically to aid libraries in their community-wide reading efforts. This program is designed to help to promote reading, research, and discovery through the sharing of perspectives among local residents who read the same book and participate in programs focused on the community selected title.
With Library Legacy financial support of up to $1,500 to each library applicant towards its program, the grant itself may be used to underwrite the honorariums and travel expenses of featured speakers and expand local advertising/marketing. Also libraries may apply annually during the two years of the FY2018 – FY2019 biennium.
Applications are to be submitted online. Information submitted via the online application form is secure. After submitting your application, you will receive an automatic email confirmation to the email address provided in the application. If you do not receive an email confirmation please contact SELCO immediately as your application may not have been received.
Please fill out the application form in full. If you are still determining dates of programs, please be sure to follow up with SELCO with confirmed times and dates if you’re not able to provide absolutely everything on the form before applying. After the application is submitted, it will go through approval. Approved applicants will receive notification as soon as possible via email and will receive all necessary paper documentation soon after.

All grant recipients are required to file a Community Reads Final Report with SELCO upon completion of their program. Evaluation materials are due within 30 days of the project’s conclusion. Information submitted via the online form is secure. After submitting your evaluation, you will receive an automatic e-mail confirmation to the e-mail address provided in the report. If you do not receive an email confirmation please contact SELCO immediately as your final report may not have been received.

How do we choose our book?
You’re free to chose your own book in whatever manner you deem works best for you. Crowdsurf your community. Plan it in conjunction with a new movie release. Choose specifically from Minnesota authors. Choose a book for each age group (child, teen, adult). We are confident that you will know what may work best for your community and so leave that choice in your very capable hands.
How many grants will be awarded?
This grant process is based on the “first come, first served” basis. We have a set pool of funds to draw from and have listed grant award amounts “up to $1,500” because we don’t know exactly how many applications we’ll receive or what amounts they will be applying for. If you are enthusiastic about this project and have your ideas in place, we’d encourage you to apply sooner rather than later to ensure funds are available.
When are the deadlines?
With this lasting over a biennium our discussions on deadlines were fluid, wanting to give folks the opportunity to apply and schedule as needed. However, recognizing that it’s sometimes nice to have that firm date to work towards or backwards from, here are the deadlines for each fiscal year for both when you should have applications in and when you should have the funds spent.
