SELCO provides email, calendaring, and contacts management for all Online Library users.
Frequently Asked Questions
What platform does SELCO use to provide email, calendars, and contacts?
Is that the same as Gmail?
No. Gmail is Google’s free email platform, available to anyone on the internet. Google Apps for Education is an enterprise-class platform provided for free to educational institutions such as schools, higher educational institutions, and libraries. The user interface for the two platforms is much the same but Google Apps for Education provides better protection for user privacy and tools for large organizations like SELCO that manage many user accounts. Unlike Gmail, email sent via Google Apps for Education does not feature advertisements.
Is there a standard form for SELCO email addresses?
Yes. As a general rule, your SELCO email address will consist of the first letter of your first name and your last name @ selco.info. The email address for Donovan Lambright, SELCO Automation Librarian, for example, is firstname.lastname@example.org.
What policies does SELCO have in regards to malware and email phishing?
After a series of incidents in 2012, SELCO created a policy about malware and phishing at our member libraries. Basically, if a staff member at a SELCO library performs an action that results in their account being vulnerable to malicious software programs, that user may be subject to a temporary loss of email privileges. The full statement including history can be found here and a PowerPoint presentation on how to avoid these situations is available here.
